Dirsize ======= Thank you for taking an interest in Dirsize. This README file contains information about the tool, how to use it, and registration details. Since Dirsize is simple to use, no online help is provided, to reduce the size of the download. >> What is Dirsize? Dirsize is a utility which displays directories sorted into size order. This is useful if you often run low of disk space and need to find which directories are using it up. Its also proved useful for network administrators, since it provides a quick and easy way to track who is filling disks. Results can be copied to the clipboard or printed. >> What do I need to run it? All you need is the file DIRSIZE.EXE. The first time you run it, Dirsize will create a DIRSIZE.INI file in your Windows directory. This contains configuration information about the color, font, etc settings you have specified. >> How do I use it? When it is started, Dirsize will display a dialog asking you for a "Root directory". After you enter a root, Dirsize will scan all the directories beneath it, and sort them into size order. >> What is the display showing me? Once it has scanned the directories, a hierarchy much like the File Manager hierarchy is displayed. The hierarchy is sorted into size order - as in the following example (generated by copying the hierarchy to the clipboard) Root directory: C: C: 145105 165569335 WINDOWS 8505654 45740734 MSVC 1296 26078994 GAMES 0 16764148 PROGRAMS 0 15056414 WINWORD 6871167 12099362 ACCESS 10560408 10691480 CORELDRW 6709 9755716 DOS 5360023 5360023 CORELCD 1612 4528165 CSERVE 921 4473123 TEMP 2004927 2004927 This is showing that the WINDOWS directory (plus all its subdirectories) contains the most data. If we were to click on the WINDOWS directory, it would open to show its subdirectories sorted into size order. The first column of numbers shows the size of files in the directory. The second column shows the total size of files in the directory, and all its subdirectories. >> What else can I do? The hierarchy can be opened or closed by double clicking on the directories. In addition, information about a directory can be displayed by choosing the File>>Information... menu item. I will leave you to investigate. The right mouse button can be used to open up a tracking menu to perform many of the same functions. >> How do I register? Dirsize is shareware, and you must register if you wish to use the software after a 2 week evaluation period. You can register the software by sending a check or money order for $7.00 (Sterling 5.00 Pounds) to... Andrew Mair, 2, Gainsborough Close, Reading. Registration will allow you use the program after the 2 week evaluation period, and will also entitle you to receive future updates.
